The work of Igor Obukhov is perfect for presenting the topic of the Russian Far East and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. The influence of the flora and fauna of the Far Eastern region, the understanding of Eastern philosophy and artistic and aesthetic values shaped the artistic language and genre preferences of the master. Through paintings, artistic images and color solutions one can feel the unbreakable connection and mutual influence of the two cultures.
For the first time, Igor Obukhov will present his paintings, graphic and ceramic works to the Moscow audience. In total, the exhibition space will house 41 works by the author. The project “To the East” covers the period from 2009 to 2024 and is the result of the artist’s numerous trips to Asian countries.
The exhibition opens with a theme related to the Russian Far East – Primorye and its capital. The beginning and end of the famous Trans-Siberian Railway in the works “Zero Kilometer” (2022) and “9288 km” (2009) are represented by the Yaroslavl station in Moscow, from where trains depart to the east, where they are met in Vladivostok by the milestone “9298 km”. The artist figuratively recorded the longest route in the world and marked the key points of movement.
“The artist’s ability to translate a feeling of delight into the language of colors makes the viewer perceive Igor Obukhov’s landscapes as a part of the beautiful world that surrounds us. When you stand in front of his paintings, a state of reflection is born, a feeling of unity with the space around us arises,” says the curator of the exhibition, director of the Primorsky Art Gallery Alena Datsenko.
The exhibition will also feature decorative panels and porcelain plates depicting the symbol of the capital of Primorye - the boy Vlad. Through the image of a young man in a vest and Budenovka, Igor Obukhov managed to link the heroic past of the seaside capital and the present into a single whole.
This is the first presentation of a modern Primorsky author at the Museum of Oriental Art and the first joint project of the Primorsky State Art Gallery (Vladivostok) with the Moscow Museum. Every year, items from the richest collection of the Orient Museum were exhibited only in Vladivostok. Alena Datsenko emphasizes that this project was implemented thanks to strong professional and partnership relations between museums.
Igor Obukhov is a Primorsky artist, professor of the Department of Painting and Drawing of the Far Eastern State Institute of Arts, member of the Union of Artists of Russia, corresponding member of the International Academy of Culture and Art, member of the international committee of the Asian Art Association.
