The meeting with members of Expedition «Avannaa»
24 november 2014
Dear Friends,
We cordially invite you to meet the participants of Expedition Avannaa - an eyewitness cultural expedition to the
world’s most isolated indigenous communities in polar, subarctic, alpine and desert areas, which are affected by
climate and societal change.
In Kalaalissut, or West Greenlandic, Avannaa means «North.» Avannaa also means the northernmost part of Greenland
where the Inughuit, formerly known as Polar Eskimos, the world’s northernmost inhabitants, live. There are only 800
of them left.

Expedition Avannaa was founded by the Greenlandic polar explorer, educator, author and actor Ole Jorgen Hammeken and
by the Russian-American performance and multimedia artist, reporter and photographer Galya Morrell.
Avannaa offers a unique view of the people and their natural habitats in the hardest-to-reach places that otherwise
stay invisible to the eyes of decision makers and general audiences worldwide.
The Program of the Evening:
26th November
- 17:00 – the opening of the photo exhibition «Avannaa: Images and Icons» by Galya Morrell – which include unique
works shown around the world and kept in many public and private collections.
- 18:30 – the lecture by Ole Jorgen Hammeken «The Polar Eskimos: Life on the Edge of the Earth.» You will learn about
culture and traditions of the Inughuit. You will also see their tools and artifacts and learn how to use them in
everyday life.
Everyone is welcome to join us for this exciting evening at the Museum of Oriental Art.
